The next generation of wind technology is aimed at capturing wind energy at ocean depths of 120-700 meters. Hywind is the planet's first full-scale floating wind turbine. The turbine is currently in testing for the next two years to test how wind and waves affect the structure of power generation. The concept has not yet been commercialized, but is attempting to reduce energy costs and make floating wind power a competitor in the green energy market. The Hywind pilot is a courtesy of StatoilHydro, a Norwegian oil and gas company with long off shore experience. The structure combines technology from the oil and gas sector with wind-power and consists of steel cylinders filled with water and rocks, which are attached to the sea beds with a three-point mooring spread.
